Attraverso brevi testi introduttivi, un ricchissimo (e in parte inedito) corredo iconografico commentato e una ricercata antologia di testi critici e letterari, il lettore è guidato attraverso suggestivi itinerari alla scoperta delle trasformazioni del Foro di Roma nei secoli fino al suo imporsi, attraverso le arti visive e i riusi simbolici e ideologici, nell'immaginario collettivo.
