The Importance of Structure
Structure is a necessity in any piece of work. Those who work in building houses need a solid foundation, and a framework for that house. Educators work to the structure of lesson plans. Businessmen work to the structure of routines and work requirements. The list goes on and on.
The same applies to writing. Writers must create their work with the aid of structure. To this end, most writers use a Three-Act or Five-Act Structure as seen in the following diagrams. These structures assist writers with understanding the essential basics of a powerful narrative. Yet, these structures also leave room for developing and expanding character roles, settings, plot points and beyond.
